Competition Winery Krutzler

Deutsch Schützen, AT

The simple, two-story structure with a gabled roof follows the centuries-old architectural logic of the region. Facing the street, the new building features a clearly defined, three-story gabled facade. On three sides, the basement is carved into the topography, ensuring optimal storage conditions for the wine and allowing the building to blend into the landscape.

The ground floor is accessed from the north and consists of six brick blocks that enclose a spacious, representative tasting room, which opens up to the surrounding landscape on all sides through floor-to-ceiling openings. The wooden attic houses the living quarters, which follow the structural framework and are organized around a central living area that rises up to the ridge. This opens to the south via two partially covered terraces.

The spacious tasting room can be divided and extends into the open space via sheltered outdoor areas.  The material selection and surface design utilize untreated, regional materials, employing them in the most appropriate manner for each application. The clay from the site’s own excavation provides thermal mass and humidity regulation for the interior spaces. The wood effortlessly spans the structural spans and creates a cozy atmosphere in the living area.

The building thus translates the structural logic and appearance of the region’s traditional architecture into a contemporary language.
