ReHABITAT-Siedlung

Mistelbach

ReHABITAT-Siedlung is a research project initiated by the Austrian Institute for Ecology (ÖÖI) in the period from October 2021 to September 2022. Within the project, an interdisciplinary team is working together, which in addition to ÖÖI also consists of experts from the Energy and Environment Agency of Lower Austria (eNu), Natur im Garten (NiG), Bodenbündnis Österreich, the city of Mistelbach as well as harddecor architektur and juri troy architects.

The pilot area is a single-family housing estate in Mistelbach with about 30 houses. Most of the existing buildings date back to the 1970s and no longer meet today's standards in terms of energy, ecological and functional building requirements. The settlement is characterised by one- to two-person households, a high average age and vacancies. The poorly developed public and social infrastructure, the lack of focus on ecology, the low quality of stay in the public space and the dependence on private cars determine the current appearance of the settlement. Thus, it represents a situation that can be found in many communities in Austria.

The research project aims to develop a sustainable vision for the pilot area 2030+. Both at the settlement level and as an example for individual buildings.

"A reduction of all resource consumption is aimed for and takes into account not only the optimisation of individual buildings, but also private, semi-public and public green and open spaces, mobility and social factors in equal measure". (ÖÖI)

In the course of the project, there is close cooperation with the residents of the settlement as well as with the city of Mistelbach. In meetings with interested households, individual needs are identified and development possibilities for the individual houses are worked out in the context of the research project. During the course of the project, a lecture evening, a Gräzelfest and a settlement workshop will be organised. In the course of this, the goals of the project will be carried into the neighbourhood and current and future challenges will be recorded. Parallel to the individual houses, a vision for the entire settlement area will be created. The project starts with the residents themselves in order to promote ecologically and socially sustainable development from the small to the large, as well as with the city of Mistelbach in order to steer the city's development goals in a holistic, future-oriented direction and to act as a model for other communities.
